ENGLISH LANGUAGE
ENGLISH Paper – 1
(Two hours)
Answers to this Paper must be written on the paper provided separately.
You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes.
This time is to be spent in reading the question paper.
The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the answers.


Attempt all four questions.
The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets [ ].
You are advised to spend not more than 35 minutes in answering Question 1 and 20 minutes in answering Question 2.
Question 1

Write a composition (350-400 words) on any one of the following:                                   [25]
(a)   Describe a personal experience that happened out of the blue.
(b)  Of late, you had an altercation with one of your intimate friends which resulted in the breakup of your friendship. Narrate the incident that caused the quarrel. Write about the feeling that you had after the fall out with your friend. Describe how the issue was resolved and your friendship was restored.
(c)   We often find that some children have virtually no support or encouragement from their parents regarding their studies in school while some others undergo extreme pressure from their over-zealous parents which can have an adverse impression on the child. In this context, discuss the role of parents in their child’s education.
(d)  Write a short story of a poor family that had had an unexpected fortune.
(e)   Study the picture given below. Write a story or a description or an account of what the picture suggests to you. Your composition may be about the subject of the picture or you may take suggestions from it; but there must be a clear connection between the picture and your composition.

Select one of the following:
(a)   You borrowed a camera from one of your classmates last month. You had promised that you will return it within a week. Now you now come to know that your classmate had gone overseas and you still have the camera. Write a letter to him/her apologising for the mistake and what you will do to rectify it.
(b)  Write a letter to the Editor of an English daily complaining about the nuisance brought on by the inconsiderate use of loudspeakers in your locality.
Question 3
Read the following story carefully and answer the questions that follow:
Long ago there lived a vicious king who contrived a method to dole out justice to culprits in his realm. The suspected offender was kept in an arena which had two doors. The wrongdoer had to choose to choose to open one of either of two doors that would open into the arena. Behind one of the indistinguishable doors prowled a fierce tiger that would spring out and wolf the suspect; behind the other door waited a beautiful damsel who would emerge and get wedded right away to the person who opened the door. The lot of the offender was to be determined solely on luck. The king’s subjects considered the trial a fair and they saw the encounter as an occasion of agreeable suspense and an instant solution.
The King had a divinely charming and beautiful daughter. She was the cynosure of the king’s eyes and was very dear to him. It so happened that a handsome young man of the king’s court dared to love the king’s daughter. Though he was courtier, he belonged to a lower class and the king questioned the youth’s audacity to love the princess. The king considered the impudence of the youth as treachery and decided to mete out justice to the young man in accordance with the prevalent practice. The young audacious lover had to be placed in the arena to select a door, a lady or a tiger. The princess, who loved the youth passionately and ardently, was in a quandary.  She did not wish to lose her handsome lover to a voracious tiger; at the same time, she was unable bear the thought of losing her cherished lover to another woman in marriage.
On the fateful day, the king placed the most savage of tigers in his entire kingdom behind one door and the most gorgeous damsel in all his land behind the other door to make sure that, whichever door the young man chose, he would get the best that could be proffered.
The princess, with her strong influence and immense wealth tried her best to learn behind which door was the tiger and behind which door was young damsel. With great effort she was able to find out the secret behind the doors.
The princess came to know that the damsel behind the door was a young and attractive woman of the court who had sent romantic looks towards the young man. The princess thought that the young man had responded to these loving glances at times. Therefore, the princess was jealous of the young woman and nursed a terrible hatred towards the woman behind the door.
In the arena, on the fateful day, the young man glanced at the princess hoping that she might know about the fate behind the doors and she would help him. When the young man looked up at the princess, she made a subtle gesture toward the right door. The young man immediately opened that door. And lo and behold! The fate he faced.
